Innovative Research

The main scholarly function of the »Musikinstrumenten-Museum« is to research historical instruments and their related performance practices. Three musicologists, specialising in the field of organology, systematically study the collections of the museum. At the same time, they supervise conservation and restoration projects together with the   restorers and organise concerts with instruments from the collection.

A close collaboration of historical and organological approaches enables insights and research results which exceed the concepts of traditional organology. Some research projects of the museum are, in the spirit of interdisciplinary cooperation, supported by other departments of the Staatliches Institut für Musikforschung.

The scholarship of the researchers is reflected in   publications, lectures, workshops, and in   special exhibitions. In addition, the museum and its scholars participate in several international committees (like    CIMCIM) aktiv tätig.
